Alright, it is time to break open the philosophy tombs again and talk about the obvious plague that is haunting our society. No I'm not talking about Right Winged nut jobs, (only kidding) I'm talking about technology. Yes as you can tell things like video games, television & computers have taken over millions of lives and sucked the life right out of every weak minded person that has succumbed to this poison.
Now I've been around the block quite a few times and I've noticed signs of addiction when people play games like World of Warcraft, Call of Duty 4, Age of Conan, Everquest, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Halo 3, Gears of War 2 and many many others. They are designed for the player to accomplish tasks in a certain amount of time. They are also designed to never give a dull moment. Also when your finished that menial task, you get a tiny sense of satisfaction or a reward and then go on playing knowing, that you are better than other people currently playing this game. And then the weak minded are sent into this world and play for hours and hours to get menial tasks done. I remember playing World of Warcraft and it was shocking. My face, glued to the screen. You couldn't get anything done in an hour it had to be two or three or four. In a vicious cycle. People claim that they can quit at any time but it draws them back in. Their "friends" need their help. And the designers show no mercy either. They keep updating the game to make it more challenges and gamers feel compelled to beat them. The definition of Obsession is an "idea or feeling that completely occupies the mind." Or preoccupation. Again mentioning in one of my previous articles. Escape from reality. Perhaps the mind needs these things just to get away. But the addicted gamers would have an excuse. "Well at least I'm not on drugs" or "I can quit at any time" but really, could stuff like this be compared to a drug?
I sure as hell think so. Why wouldn't it? Drugs are used to give happiness and take away pain and perception. To escape and forget all worries. Well wouldn't that be the same with video games? Considering the problems the world is having with these games. I think that proper precautions should be made with the parents before buying games like these. Perhaps, that might seem a bit drastic but look! People like you and me are committing suicide, running away, developing social issues & isolating themselves from their friends and family. It sounds like one hell of a drug doesn't it? The picture above shows a frail kid, curled up in the corner of a wrecked "junkie" house & with virtual reality goggles plugged into an outlet. This is basically stating that In the not so distant future. Kids addiction can be and are the same thing as a drug addiction. The picture shows it damages you physically & mentally.
Carl Gustav Jung a modern era influential thinker and good friend of Sigmund Freud, once said "Every form of addiction is bad, no matter whether the narcotic be alcohol or morphine or idealism." This means that basically no matter what kind of addiction it is, it is all bad. Which is totally true! People take these habits in and suppress themselves from the world. Suppression means in psychological terms "avoidance of thoughts and feelings: conscious avoidance or inhibition of memories, desires, or thoughts." Going further into the psychological matter. Everyone can succumb to addiction, not just the weak minded.
I would also like to state that Intervention plays a major if not the most important part of all with addicting situations. Intervention means: "action affecting another's affairs: the act of intervening, especially a deliberate entry into a situation or dispute in order to influence events or prevent undesirable consequences" Once you interfere with something as fragile as someones escapism problem. They could lash out on you or try and further suppress their feelings & become more isolated.
The world is large, 6 billion + people inhabit it and we all have our own individuality. We have our strengths and weaknesses some are stronger, smarter, faster and more physically appealing than others. It doesn't make you a better person. Insecurity is a large factor and when an escapism world where you have the chance to be better at someone else, the strongest, the fastest, & even the richest for only 15$ a month, who wouldn't take that offer?
